The Victoria Cross is created
Queen Victoria signs the royal warrant creating the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy. The plain bronze cross, cast from cannon captured in the Crimea, bears the simple inscription For Valour. It will be won first by men of the Crimean and Indian battlefields.
