Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel appears in book form in Boston after serialisation in an abolitionist newspaper. It sells 3,000 copies on its first day and 300,000 in its first year. The book electrifies the anti-slavery cause -- Lincoln will later greet Stowe as the little lady who made this big war.
