The Chartist petition
On a rainy Monday, some 150,000 Chartists gather on Kennington Common, then carry their great petition -- three miles of signatures -- to Parliament. The Duke of Wellington has 8,000 troops and 150,000 special constables ready. The petition is rejected, but its demands will all become law within a lifetime.
