November 9 in Victorian History
What the Victorians were up to on this date, year by remarkable year.
1841
The future Edward VII is born
Queen Victoria gives birth to a son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, at Buckingham Palace. Bertie will wait nearly sixty years for the throne -- the longest apprenticeship in royal history. As Edward VII he will lend his name to a whole age.
1888
Mary Jane Kelly is murdered
The body of Mary Jane Kelly is found in her room at 13 Miller's Court -- the Ripper's fifth and final canonical victim, and the only one killed indoors. The savagery of the murder shocks even hardened policemen. After this, the killings stop -- but the killer is never caught.
