Nellie Bly races around the world
Reporter Nellie Bly — Elizabeth Cochrane of the New York World — boards a steamer out of New York to beat Phileas Fogg's fictional eighty days, carrying one small bag. She circles the globe alone, filing dispatches the whole way, and returns in seventy-two days, six hours and eleven minutes. The stunt makes her the most famous woman journalist in America.
