December 29 in Victorian History
What the Victorians were up to on this date, year by remarkable year.
1860
HMS Warrior is launched
At Blackwall on the Thames, HMS Warrior slides into the river -- the world's first iron-hulled, armour-plated warship. Bigger, faster and more powerful than anything afloat, she makes every wooden navy obsolete overnight. She survives today as a museum ship at Portsmouth.
1890
Wounded Knee
On the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, US troops open fire on Lakota Sioux, killing some 300 men, women and children. Wounded Knee ends the Indian Wars of the American West. A century of conquest closes in massacre.
