kibosh
Nonsense, humbug; to put the kibosh on something is to bring it to an effectual stop.
“The chairman put the kibosh on the whole scheme with a single withering sentence.”
Note: Hotten's 1864 Slang Dictionary gives both senses — ‘nonsense, stuff, humbug’ and ‘to put an effectual end or stop to it’. The true origin was already disputed in 1864.
