The BBC's four-part North & South (2004) adapts Elizabeth Gaskell's 1854β55 novel. Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe) moves from the rural south to the industrial town of Milton β Gaskell's fictional Manchester β where she collides with the proud cotton-mill owner John Thornton (Richard Armitage).
The period detail is industrial Victoriana at its most vivid: the roar of the mills, the smoke hanging over Milton, the workers' cottages and the masters' drawing rooms, and the great strike that puts Margaret and Thornton on opposite sides. It is the 1850s as lived experience β cotton, class, and soot.
Victorian fans revere it as the gold standard of the literary adaptation β faithful, fiery, and romantic without softening Gaskell's social conscience. Armitage's Thornton, all pride and buried tenderness, made the series a word-of-mouth phenomenon.
