Ripper Street

Set in the East End in April 1889, six months after the last of Jack the Ripper's murders, Ripper Street follows the men of H Division. Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen), Sergeant Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn), and the American surgeon-turned-detective Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) confront crimes the Victorian age barely had names for.
The show is a feast of period texture: fog-thick alleys, doss-houses and music halls, and the new science of forensics β fingerprinting, early crime-scene photography β colliding with old-school policing. It treats 1889 as a hinge moment, when the modern world was arriving in Whitechapel whether anyone wanted it or not.
Victorian fans love it for taking the Ripper mythology seriously without sensationalizing it β the murders are aftermath, not spectacle. It pays close attention to how policing, medicine, and journalism were all being invented at once in the 1890s.
