The BBC's Cranford adapts Elizabeth Gaskell's novels about a Cheshire market town in the 1840s. A community of mostly unmarried gentlewomen β led by Miss Matty Jenkyns (Judi Dench) β navigates change with ritual, gossip, and quiet courage.
The period detail is domestic and precise: the tyranny of calling cards and tea etiquette, the arrival of the railway, new medical ideas, and the slow intrusion of the industrial age into a town that runs on propriety. It is the Victorian era at its smallest and most human scale.
Victorian fans love it as the antidote to fog-and-murder Victoriana β warm, funny, and quietly devastating. Dench's Miss Matty is among the most beloved performances in period drama.
