Apple TV+'s six-part The Essex Serpent adapts Sarah Perry's 2016 novel. After her abusive husband's death, the amateur naturalist Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) flees London for the Essex village of Aldwinter, where rumors of a sea serpent — a winged beast said to stalk the Blackwater estuary — have the locals terrified. She sets out to find a rational, scientific explanation, and in doing so collides with the village vicar Will Ransome (Tom Hiddleston), who sees the panic as a failure of faith.

The period detail is pure late-Victorian natural history: fossil hunting on the mudflats, specimen jars, the new science of paleontology filtering into drawing-room conversation, and a London still buzzing with Darwin's aftershocks. Cora is a recognizably Victorian figure — the educated woman told her curiosity is unseemly — and the show treats the serpent mania as the era really lived it: part folklore, part tabloid sensation, part genuine scientific puzzle.

Victorian fans love it for dramatizing the fault line the whole era stood on — faith versus science, superstition versus evidence. The estuary itself is the star: grey, tidal, and full of things half-seen. It is a ghost story where the ghost might just be an undiscovered species.

Frequently asked

Is The Essex Serpent based on a true story?

No — it adapts Sarah Perry's 2016 novel, set in 1893 in the fictional Essex village of Aldwinter. But the serpent panic mirrors real Victorian sea-serpent mania: sailors' sightings, like HMS Daedalus's famous 1848 report, were front-page news, and Cora's fossil hunting nods to the era's craze for paleontology.

Who stars in The Essex Serpent?

Claire Danes plays the widowed amateur naturalist Cora Seaborne, and Tom Hiddleston plays Will Ransome, the Aldwinter vicar who clashes with her over the serpent. The six-episode series was released on Apple TV+ in 2022.

Where was The Essex Serpent filmed?

The series was filmed in Aldeburgh, Suffolk — doubling for Victorian Essex — and in London. Its story is set in 1893 on the Blackwater estuary, where a rumored winged serpent has a coastal village in a panic.

Why it matters today

The show revived the Victorian sea-serpent craze for modern viewers — a reminder that the 1890s were as hungry for cryptozoology and scientific marvels as any internet age.
